Calculate payback time for a given page title Not using ROI anymore since it didn't appear to be a good predictor of the kind of page title to do. We are just using the most popular titles for a topic now. ROI tended to select less well known titles but these didn't appear to get hits. The problem may be that the number of competing pages, as calculated using the title in double quotes, is not a useful predictor since double quotes are not often used in searches. A formula to calculate the payback time in days after doing a page about a phrase. It assumes a labour cost of $21 per page but if it were $30 for example then multiply the result by 30/21. Click 'Calculate ROI' and enter 3 numbers separated by spaces:- (Daily Traffic, Number of competing pages, Google max CPC) This procedure was working as of 30 June 2005 but no guarantees for the Get Traffic, Google competing, and Google max CPC links in the future. There are three factors to determine:- --------------------------------------- 1. Daily Traffic. This is the Wordtracker predicted daily total search engine traffic of the phrase. Click the 'Get Traffic' link in col3 of this page to get the Predict figure. Type the phrase in without surrounding quotes. Ignore any popups. For example 'blue whales' was 998. NOW CHECK FOR OVERTURE SCORE. Phrases with no Overture score are not recommended for doing pages on. Click the link 'Check for Overture Score' and type the phrase in. Wait a bit then look down any list to see if the phrase has a score. Note that Overture treats plurals as singular. If there's no score then don't do a page on it because you can't be sure the Wordtracker Predict figure is not all from the same person. You wouldn't really need to do this test for high Predict figure phrases. --------------------------- 2. Number of competing pages. Click the 'Google competing' link in col3. If say the phrase was "blue whales" then enter that in google INCLUDING the surrounding DOUBLE quotes and you would have seen 'Results 1 - 10 of about 78,100' so 78,100 was the number of competing pages for "blue whales". It can also be found using the competition search in wordtracker. -------------------------- 3. Google max CPC. This is the maximum CPC recommended by Google AdWords for the particular STARTING TERM of the phrase topic, rather than the phrase itself. See the link in Col3 to Starting Terms. High CPC means the traffic is more valuable. So the Google max CPC only has to be found for the starting terms, not for every single page. Do not use Netscape 4.7x for this. Click the link 'Google max CPC' in col3 and then click 'Click to Begin' (where it says 'Sign up now'). Then fill in the box 'Name your new Ad Group', use 'Test' if you like, and make sure English language is selected. Then click Continue. In the next page make sure 'All countries' is selected then click Continue. In the next page put 'Test' in headline and 2 description boxes and 'Plexel.com' in the display and destination url boxes Test and Plexel.com are not important you can use other ones if you want. Click Continue. A 'Please wait...' message comes up. Now enter the website title e.g. 'Whales' in the Example List box and click continue. Click View Traffic Estimator. A price should come up like this " Estimates for the maximum CPC: $1.63". So $1.63 was the answer. Make sure the price is in US dollars. --------------------------------- Now you should have the three figures. You will need Netscpe 4.7x for this and the 'Edit New Store ....' menu bar at the bottom of your window showing. Click Calculate ROI in col3 and enter them in the input box like so:- 998 78100 1.63 The result comes up:- Payback period is 3438.4 days So 'Blue Whales' is not a page to do if you want to stay in business! The phrase has too much competition, is not that popular, and the topic is low paying. If your labour cost was $30 a day just multiply the result by 30/21 giving 4912 day payback. For this phrase you would need a page labour cost of = $1.01 to get a payback time of 6 months. (180/3438.4 x 21) -------------------------------- The formula uses the following guesswork:- 0 competing pages gives you 100% of the traffic. This one at least is fairly accurate. 40 competing pages gives you 50% of the traffic. Your pages will likely be better than most of these. 100 competing pages gives you 30% of the traffic.
