IMAGE COMPRESSION AND PUTTING IMAGES IN THE PAGE ------------------------------------------------ Even though Plexel will put images in the page for you and they will work ok, if the original image was badly made then we need to correct it. There is a program JPEG Optimiser to do this for you. Either go to this page file:///C:/Master/JPEGOptimiser.htm for further instructions or please download from here:- http://www.plexos.com/shared/Zip/jpopt3.exe double click it and Unzip. If you now browse to homepage and click Edit + JPEG Optimiser, it should bring up a new window. Click Open and you should see a list of all the .jpg and .jpeg files in the main folder (I am assumimg you have put several images in). You could also use it on a /images subfolder if you do 'List + Images' or 'List + List Files' then click the images subfolder and then do Edit + JPEG Optimiser. As in most things Plexel operates relative to the page you see in the Display window. Click on the first image file, then hold down the SHIFT key and click on the last file. Now all the image files should be highlighted. If so, click Open (the one above Cancel) and then OK. Now click 'Save' and 'Yes' also I would untick the magiCompression option since it seemed to reduce the image quality quite a bit. That's it, it should go through all your image files compressing them one by one. You should not lose any significant quality but can make enormous file size savings. Upload changed files. Check out the file sizes before and after, in one case it reduced a file size of 300KB down to about 30KB for no visible loss in quality. .gif files can be quite large and it is better to convert them to .jpg. I already did that for you but no doubt you will download more .gif's. You can convert them with the Graphics button in Plexel. Click Graphics and then download PSP as prompted. To edit an image first copy Image location to clipboard and then hit the Graphics button, Plexel should load the image straight into PSP after the nag box. Then you can save a .gif file as JPEG (.jpg) type. You will have to manually edit the image reference in the picture from .gif to .jpg too and finally delete the .gif file. -----ANOTHER EMAIL ON THIS -------- Image optimisation. Even though Plexel will put images in the page for you and they will work ok, if the original image was badly made then we need to correct it. There is a program JPEG Optimiser to do this for you. Download this:- http://www.plexos.com/shared/Zip/jpopt3.exe double click it and Unzip. If you now browse to the Cat homepage and click Edit + JPEG Optimiser, it should bring up a new window. Click Open and you should see a list of all the .jpg and .jpeg files in the cats folder (I am assumimg you have put several images in). Click on the first image file, then hold down the SHIFT key and click on the last file. Now all the files should be highlighted. If so, click Open (the one above Cancel) and then OK. Now click 'Save' and 'Yes'. That's it, it should go through all your image files compressing them. > Firstly, I have two browser windows open (Netscape for plexel) and Internet Explorer for locating images ? I don?t think using IE would pose a problem though, do you John? LOCATING IMAGES --------------- For locating images it is slightly different from Netscape. Right click on the image and click Properties then highlight the Address (URL) and use CTRL+C to copy the location. That is IE 6.0 anyway. I can't vouch for other versions of IE, microsoft always keep fiddling with things. > I have then been right clicking on the image I want (although the 'copy shortcut' button appears to be disabled), so I have been using ?copy?. Again, I am uncertain whether this would make any difference? It is not the shortcut one you want it is 'Properties'. You can easily check what you have copied by using CTRL+V to paste the contents of the clipboard to say the broswer Address box. It should be the url of the image starting with http:// and ending in .jpg or .gif or some other image type ending. > I have then tried to paste the image into the clipboard (I think that's what I'm supposed to do isn't it?) No, copy not paste, paste is for pasting out the clipboard to somewhere else. > but, there are two buttons which both say clipboard on them ? if I am right in thinking you have to paste/save images into the clipboard, which would be the right location to save images in? ?? I think somethings going wrong here. Where are the two buttons that say 'clipboard'? You are only copying the image *location* into the clipboard not the image itself. Please see my other email on how to do images. I think you are trying the images before I told you how? Actually I can't remember if I did tell you or not? > In the display window, I then went to ?new? and where it says saving images, insert image - and so on. > However, after clicking ?insert image? a window appeared saying that there was no jpg, png, etc to be saved. I did actually view the image properties prior to this and it was in fact a jpg. You didn't get the image location into the clipboard. To put images in you use New + New picture into the Display. More specifically you do these:- 1. Copy the image location into clipboard. See above for more on this. 2. From the Display page click New 3. Click 'store' on the New form, then wait... 4. Click 'put image in' after selecting from the drop down box and the check boxes. See the New form Help link too.
