Checking Links. Listing and checking the internal and external links for breaks
Internal links are relative links within the site e.g. <A HREF="Cooking_Tips.htm">... These links are normally seen in col3 often with thumbnail images. There shouldn't be more than 12 internal links in col3/col2 in order to avoid large pages. Utility + List:Problems should identify pages with more than 12 links. It the disk filename is say Cooking_tips.htm but the internal link is as above then Utility + Links Int broken also changes the href to <A HREF="Cooking_tips.htm"> in order to work with unix servers which are case sensitive. Image links <IMG SRC="... are also checked/fixed. External links are links to other websites e.g. <A HREF="http://fred.com/page1.htm ">... is an external link. There should be at least one external link per page. You can use Utility + Links: to list/check the links for breaks. There are three options:- Ext (List External links) Ext Broken (check external links) Int Broken (check internal links and fix any that are case different from the disk filename) Ext Broken is possibly the most useful: This automatically checks external links to other websites to see if any are broken or redirect. This is a necessary maintenance check every few months for all the sites just to check the external links still function since we have no control over what owners of external sites do. You need to be online for this check. You can do it thoughout folder in order to check a whole site in one go. After completion of a site this check should be run and also the check Utility + Links: Int Broken + Throughout folder + OK to test the internal links for any breaks. After you have fixed any broken links you should also do Utility + Make any Duplicates + Throughout folder. This is so that any duplicate pages are updated if their 'original' page had broken links that have been fixed.
